Montana Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

January 06 2010
From humble interesting beginnings Montana is a huge brand. After exchanging hands several times it is now owned by Pernod-Ricard.

The bottle livery looks unremarkable, almost a bit cheap and throw away. A high shouldered Bordeaux shape reflecting the blend of grapes inside (Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon).

An interesting point is that I picked up the 2008 vintage from Waitrose, but I cannot find that vintage mentioned on the Montana site, or the Waitrose website. Another observation is that there appears to be one bottle for 'them' (NZ,AUS) and one for 'us' (UK) on the Montana website of the same 2007 wine. Sounds like we have ended up with the dregs...

Opening this overly bling gold screw top reveals a wine that I will not ever drink again.

To be frank (several of us came to the same conclusion), it was like the reverse biblical miracle had been performed. Wine seemed to have been turned to water. It looked like wine, but tasted, well like nothing much at all . Almost teasing the palate, like getting a passing whiff of a bakery on a cold winter's morning, the elusive aromas seemed to vanish.

An immensely frustrating wine. Buy it at your peril.
