I first came across Moldovan wine back in 2006 and posted about it here . There is currently lots of buzz about a company determined to improve the quality and quantity of Moldovan wine in the UK. This is excellent news, as we need more variety. So where exactly is Moldova? Sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, frustratingly close to the Black Sea (which I think resembles a negative image of Australia), a strip of land belonging to Ukraine keeps Moldova landlocked. The climate is like that of Burgundy, and the southern half of the country is the best region for grape growing. After establishing itself as a wine producer as early as the 3rd century BC due to trade links with the Greeks and subsequently the Roman Empire, it went from strength to strength until 300 years of Ottoman rule banned wine making. When Moldova became a province of the Russian Empire grape growing resumed with lots of interesting regional varieties I have never heard off. This was majorly diluted with the importing of French varieties in the early 19th century which explains why the Firebird Legend I wrote about in my previous post was Merlot. Modern Moldovan wine has recognisable grape varieties on the label like Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, often blended with more local traditional grapes.Where is this company that is going to transform Moldovan wine in the UK? It is called Imperia UK, check out the website here for more info.
