Chateau Le Fregne 2007 Bordeaux

November 26 2009
This bottle of Bordeaux is known as a 'petit chateau', which bascially means it is not part of the prestigious Bordeaux classification system, but considered a step above standard AOC (appellation d'origine controlee) wines which are granted basic certification by the French.

So it is seemingly indecisive in nature, floating in a sort of no man's land.

The packaging is very presentable, and slightly lifeless. Almost like I am looking at a Pixar CGI idealistic representation. On closer inspection the thin red foil was loose, so much so that I could almost have pulled it off. The cork was flimsy and very undetermined.

I thought the wine was well balanced, not too bitter/tannic, and not too strong at 13%. It was just missing something, a distinct lack of substance. It did not set my senses alight, or even slightly tickle them. It was basically OK.

But wait a minute how much are we paying for this bottle?

The initial price seems a bit steep at £6.99 from Majestic but this reduces to £4.99 if you buy two.

£4.99 is an excellent price for what the wine delivers. It is ultimately pleasant mediocrity. If nothing else the bottle will certainly look picture perfect on the dinner table.

If you are on a budget and want no suprises this is one for you.
