Le Froglet Shiraz 2009 (in a sealed plastic glass)

June 02 2010
So here is my tasting note on this 'innovative' wine delivery system from Marks & Spencer. Follow this link for my pre-tasting first impressions.

I pulled at the foil and nothing budged. I then remembered yoghurt top syndrome where you can easily cover yourself with the gooey stuff within. So I turned the lid away and yanked really hard. It gave way with a muted pop and droplets of red wine showered the wall. A small victory for my shirt, and a disaster for the paintwork.

Now the clever sealing mechanism was revealed. How do you make an airtight seal between the delicate plastic glass rim and the foil?

Well not so clever, in fact clumsy to the extreme. There appears to be a relatively wide plastic like ring attached to the edge of the glass, which makes a large and flat surface area for the foil to stick to. The problem is that this ring is not flush with the glass, so when you try and sip, it feels abrasive to the lips. Like you are drinking wine from a child's chemistry set receptacle. Really unpleasant.

There is no way on earth you are going to want to reuse the glass, or continue sipping for that matter.

The 187ml also fills the glass to a vulgar precariously full level, which takes away another layer of sophistication.

Now to the wine.

It was horrendous. Not balanced at all. Very rough on the palate, not helped by the glass. I took a couple of sips and threw it down the sink.

My view is avoid this product until a better way is found to seal the wine.

Taking everything into account, it is hands down the worst glass of wine I have ever drunk.

I disagree. I think the idea is clever and useful (admittedly the rim could be smoother but it dodnt really cause me a problem) and I thought the le Froglet rose was one of the nicer roses Ive had we since bought the bottle as well as more of the glasses.

Youve got it wrong. Youre supposed to push a straw through the foil.

Just tried the Shiraz wine & I must disagree! I found the wine very smooth on the pallet! I think it is a fabulous idea! Great for picnics, & BBQs & hotel rooms when a glass of wine is required to relax! Enjoyable! Certainly flying of the shelves of a reputable supermarket chain! In time James Nashs invention Im sure will be proof in itself!

terrible wine, dont know whether its the varietal they used or the fact that it has not been sealed using a vaccuum. Maybe they just flushed the top with hydrogen before sealing not good enough to prevent oxidation. Back to the drawing board please M&S.

Not only the quality is bad but this product is not the first on the market. Ive seen ready to drink glasses of wine in France. The glass was under vacuum.more quality. www.quartvin.com

Ive never had the plastic cup version but Froglet Wine, white, pink and red are all very nice for the price.
